Chilly chicken

Here is yet another hot chicken favorite of My Dhaba - the chilly chicken. Chicken being the common meat we have at home, we learned that kids have a special liking towards chicken dishes when compared to goat/lamb/beef meats perhaps due to its succulent tenderness than a tough, chewy mess. :-) Any point of differences?

Chilly chicken recipe

Ingredients:
Chicken – ½ kg, boneless, cut into 1-inch pieces
Onion – 2, medium size, finely sliced
Ginger – ½ inch size, finely chopped and crushed
Garlic – 2 beads, finely chopped and crushed
Tomato – 1, big size, fully ripe, pureed; or alternatively use 1 tablespoon of tomato sauce
Green chillies – 3, medium size, medium hot, finely chopped
Capsicum - 1, sliced length-wise
Red chilly powder – 1 teaspoon
Black pepper powder – ½ teaspoon
All purpose flour – 2 tablespoons
Soya sauce – 3 teaspoons
Vinegar – 2 teaspoons
Salt – ½ teaspoon
Oil – 1 tablespoon

Method: Mix well the flour, chilly powder, black pepper powder, soya sauce, vineger, tomato puree, ginger, garlic, and salt. Add the chicken pieces to this marinade and marinate it covered for 2-4 hours in a refrigerator. Heat oil in a fry pan and when the oil is very hot, add the onions and saute till slightly golden. Add the marinated chicken pieces and capsicum and saute on low heat for 30 to 35 minutes or until the chicken is tender taking care not to burn the chicken pieces by stirring continually. Sprinkle a litte hot water only whenever needed while cooking. Serve it hot garnished with onion rings, lemon wedges, tomato slices, and/or fresh green chillies as a main entrée or as appetising snacks. Enjoy!

    Great Recipe!!
What I have done differently is to first fry the chicken in hot oil ( without the marinade) then saute the onions , chicken and bell peppers separately before adding the marinade to the pan.Fry till marinade almost thickens.

This was very good and tastes just like the chili chicken at our favorite indian restaurant.

I eliminated the green chillies and bell peppers (capsicum) and instead used 6-7 large jalapeno peppers cut lengthwise. I grilled the onions and jalapenos first for about 15-20mins on med-low heat to soften them up, then added the chicken and sauteed for about 30-45 minutes to make sure the jalapenos were nice & soft. It came out great and I'll definitely make again.

PS for others wondering the same thing as I was: 1/2kg = 1.1lbs; I also used 1 med finely chopped onion instead of two sliced and used ginger/garlic powder spices.

  34. This is an amature recipe for chilli chicken. As already commented by somebody the flour coating will not stick to the chicken if you follow the recipe.A good chilli chicken should have nice flour coating and then covered by the sauce.I would strongly discorage anyone from trying this

Not good as chilli chicken does not get a good flour coating

  38. Hi, I came across this recipe and it looks delicious. I am planning to make it in advance in the afternoon for a dinner party, and then heat it again before serving. Anyone have any idea about how to reheat this dish without making the chicken hard and tough? It would be almost impossible for me to cook this right when all the guests have come for the party.
    Thanks.

I tried this recipe and came out excellent. Your recipe said one teaspoon of red chili powder but I used half tea spoon and still it was very hot. I used the red hili powder from indian grocery store. Did you suggest anything different type of chili powder. Thanks for posting the recipe.

    Hi
Just tried this recipe. The flavor was awesome. However the chicken was cooked in 15 min since it was small pieces and the pieces were anluttle hard. Did u do something wrong? Or it's the chicken you get in US?

  51. Great recipe. Most time consuming part was cutting all the garlic, onions, green peppers up. Would definitely recommend the 2 hours (maybe even overnight?) marination time. I think it probably makes a huge difference. Another tip is to keep stirring the chicken so it doesn't stick to your skillet and burn. This can happen easily because of the flour addition in the marinade. Since I used fresh tomatoes, I added a little less than a tablespoon of ketchup (I do this with a lot of my curries) and it added just the right amount of salt and sugar the dish needed. Also took me about 20 minutes on the stove rather than the suggested 35. Enjoy!
